Asia: Japan
Tipping is generally not customary in Japan, but if you do tip, 10% is sufficient in restaurants with no added service charge. Commonly a service charge is added to a restaurant bill, and there is no reason to tip beyond that. You don't need to tip in bars or nightclubs either. Nor do taxi drivers expect to be tipped, although hired chauffeurs may be tipped ¥00 (500 yen) for a half-day or ¥1000 for a full day. Porters in railway stations and airports charge for their service - from ¥200 to ¥300. There is no need to tip employees in hotels, but if you feel you must, place a tip of ¥2000 to ¥3000 in an envelope and discreetly hand it to its intended recipient.
