Asia: India

In general, India runs on tips, and Rs10 (10 rupees) - be it to a taxi driver, a doorman, or the shopkeeper's helper who carries your bulky goods to the car - go a long way in securing good service. Be sure to keep plenty of rupees to pass around throughout the day. In restaurants, tip the waiter 10%. Some hotels may include a service charge, but tip doormen, bellhops, and maids between Rs20 and Rs30. Tip room service waiters 10% of the check. Give airport and rail porters Rs5 to Rs10 per bag. Be sure to negotiate the tip before handing over your bags. Taxi drivers don't expect tips unless they go out of their way for you. If you hire a car and driver, tip Rs50 to Rs100 per day. Local guides you hire on the spot rate Rs40 for a half-day tour and Rs80 for a full day.
