About Us
This site came about out of a spirited debate I had with my wife over how much to tip our waitresses one evening. I wanted to leave a 15% tip and she argued that no one leaves 15% anymore, "everyone" tips 20% for typical service.
I asked her who "everyone" was and she replied everyone she knows. While my wife may know a lot of people, (let's say 200), when it comes to how much they tip, it probably isn't more than 2-3 people. I thought wouldn’t it be great to be able to tell her “actually 75% of the public tip 15%”.
From that thought, this web site was born. My mission was to learn what the typical or average tip Americans leave for various situations. I believe polling data is more meaningful than independent gratuity recommendations data. As ultimately, the market determines what to tip, not recommendations, as objective and credible as they may be.
I hope you find our site useful and please let us know if we are missing a tipping category.
Yours truly,
John Gessford
